U této autorky bychom obtížně hledali tradičně vystavěný příběh, její knihy jsou na první pohled přerušované, osamělé reflexe, vzpomínky, poznámky, náznaky, útržky. Podobnost se stylem francouzské prozaičky Camille Laurens je patrná, ale Španělka je mnohotvárnější a niternější. Pokud je literatura sebereflexe a (auto)terapie, zde to platí dvojnásob: autorce zemřela ve třech letech matka, měla problematický vztah k otci, který se promítl do vztahu k oběma jejím manželům (dnes už přiznává, že autorem starší dcery je Samuel Beckett. Ale to, co vzniká v knihách, nejsou prvoplánové autobiografické příběhy. Jsou to dokonale komponované osobní prožitky psané jednou nádherným básnickým jazykem, podruhé surově a bezohledně hodnotící vlastní minulost: o matce a otci, dětech, přátelích, milencích. Tak trochu „soupis životních traumat“, vše, co se mi stalo a jak jsem to zpracovala… Nuria Amat řeší v každé kapitole svůj vztah k té či oné osobě. Nuria Amat (1951) je významná španělská prozaička. Vydala dvě desítky děl románových i literatury faktu. Je přispěvatelkou prestižního deníku El País. V češtině se představuje poprvé.

1975 reiste die katalanische Autorin Nuria Amat mit ihrem damaligen Mann, dem von dort stammenden Schriftsteller Oscar Collazos, nach Bahía Solano, einen kleinen Ort an der kolumbianischen Pazifikküste. Ein Vierteljahrhundert später, 2001, verarbeitete sie ihre Erfahrungen von damals, in die neuere, von Drogenhandel und Gewalt beherrschte Zeit versetzt, in dem Roman Reina de América. Hauptfigur des Romans ist die junge Katalanin Montserrat, die ihrem kolumbianischen Geliebten, dem schwarzen Schriftsteller Wilson, in sein Heimatdorf am Pazifik folgt, wo er sich vor Morddrohungen wegen seiner kritischen Zeitungsartikel versteckt hält. Umgeben von undurchdringlichem Urwald und deprimiert vom unaufhörlichen Tropenregen bewohnt das Paar eine Hütte am Strand. In der Nachbarschaft lebt Aida, eine in okkultistischem Aberglauben verhaftete Schwarze; sie wird Montserrats Vertraute und ständige Begleiterin auf ihren gefährlichen, abenteuerlichen Wegen. Zwischen den bewaffneten Auseinandersetzungen von Angehörigen der Guerrilla, der Armee, der Paramilitärs und der Drogenmafia einerseits und der ebenso leidenschaftlichen wie problematischen Liebesbeziehung andererseits erlebt die junge Frau eine physische und emotionale Gefangenschaft in einer von Gewalt, Drogen und Alkohol bedrohten Umgebung. Die Lichtgestalt Lucila ist Dorflehrerin und kämpft mit Mut, neuen Ideen und Idealen für die Befreiung der vom Koka-Anbau lebenden schwarzen und indianischen Campesinos aus ihrem lethargischen Fatalismus, doch sie scheitert an der brutalen Wirklichkeit; von Aida wird sie als „Königin von Amerika“ bezeichnet. Die Handlung gipfelt im Tanz um das goldene Kalb Kokain, der wahren Herrscherin von Amerika.
