„Můj deník je částí mého já, která by jinak přetekla přes okraj a přišla nazmar,“ poznamenal si roku 1841 americký spisovatel a přírodovědec Henry David Thoreau do deníku, který si vedl čtyřiadvacet let. První český výbor z rozsáhlého díla ukazuje celou šíři autorovy osobnosti. Vedle úvah o přírodě, umění, dějinách, politice, náboženství a dokonce i sexu obsahuje také střípky z Thoreauova soukromí, „nekorektní“ postřehy o ženách i vtipné historky.
