Volker Michels, geboren 1943, trat nach dem Studium der Medizin und Psychologie 1969 als Lektor für deutsche Literatur in die Verlage Suhrkamp und Insel ein, wo er sich u. a. auch als Herausgeber für zahlreiche Autoren der Gegenwart und Vergangenheit eingesetzt hat. Insbesondere widmete er sich den Werken und Briefen von Hermann Hesse, dessen literarischen und bildnerischen Nachlass er in mehr als hundert Themenbänden veröff entlicht und 2005 mit der Edition einer zwanzigbändigen Gesamtausgabe abgeschlossen hat.
