Kľúč k temnote je výberom z neobyčajne rozsiahlej tvorby amerického umelca a prozaika Roberta W. Kráľ v žltom je nepochybne dielom skutočného majstra a právom sa považuje za jeden z medzníkov v dejinách weird literature. Autor zavrhol tradičné monštrá, ktoré tomuto žánru verne slúžili po celé roky – upírov, vlkolakov, duchov, alebo pekelné légie – dedičstvo tradičnej kresťanskej démonológie, a hľadá nové, originálne zdroje hrôzy – rozsiahlejšie, neľudské, jedným slovom, kozmické. Medzi ne patrí aj monštruózna zakázaná kniha, ktorej čítanie prináša strach, šialenstvo a skazu, a ktorá na pozadí voľne spája poviedky v zbierke. Azda najsilnejším príbehom je Žlté znamenie, v ktorom stretávame tichého a hrozivého strážcu cintorína s tvárou tučného bieleho červa z hrobu. Mladíka, popisujúceho bitku s týmto netvorom, striasa a napína, keď si spomenie na istý detail: „Dobre, pane, ako že je Boh nado mnou, keď som mu vrazil, zdrapil ma za zápästie, pane, a keď som mu vykrúcal ten jeho hubovitý pazúr, jeden z jeho prstov mi ostal v ruke.“ Umelec, ktorý strážnika pozoruje z okna svojho bytu, z hrôzou zisťuje, že on i jeho modelka videli rovnakého muža vo sne. Až napokon počas vychádzky strážnik na umelca prehovorí a huhňavým hlasom, ktorý pripomína hustý mastný dym zo suda škvariaceho sa mäsa alebo ako zápach nechutného rozkladu, mu kladie otázku: „Našiel si Žlté znamenie?“

Našťastie sa im však podarí získať pre spoluprácu mladú dievčinu Tressu Nornovú, ktorá vďaka rokom stráveným v najvyššom chráme kultu ovládla magické sily a dokáže sa postaviť aj vodcovi zlovestného komlotu, samotnému Ničiteľovi duší. S jej pomocou majú teraz agenti tajnej služby ďaleko väčšiu šancu čeliť silám Zla.
