Od roku 1746, když vyšla kniha Augustina Calmeta o zjeveních poprvé, neopouští žebříček bestsellerů. I přesto můžeme tvrdit, že za celou dobu nebyla nikdy doceněna, a proto vychází tato studie, která má za cíl toto pozoruhodné dílo nejen nabídnout dnešnímu čtenáři, ale i je zhodnotit z hlediska přínosu v době svého vydání a dnes. Augustina Calmeta upoutaly zprávy o mad'arských a moravských upírech a začal je zkoumat. Odmítl z nich všechno, co považoval za výplod místní pověrčivosti, ale zároveň zkoumal vše, co se vztahovalo k otázce přežití smrti těla. Jednotlivé projevy dokumentoval na 150 případech, které zde s větší, či menší přesností uvádí. Tím položil základ k výzkumu klinické smrti. Jeho výsledky jej vedly i k tomu, že s největší pravděpodobností přijal myšlenku reinkarnace. Je však samozřejmé, že ve své době o ní nemohl mluvit otevřeně. Toto dílo je opakovaně vydáváno francouzsky, německy a anglicky a snad i v dalších jazycích. Autor shromáždil mnohem více zpráv, než uvádí ve své knize.
