Doklady z tisícileté historie lidstva i ze současnosti ukazují, že pokrok závisí na rozhodnutích ohledně způsobu využívání nových technologií. Autoři popisují, že tato rozhodnutí příliš často přinesla pohádkové zisky elitám, ale pro řadové členy společnosti znamenala spíš více práce, a pokud vůbec došlo ke zlepšení jejich materiálních podmínek, bylo zcela nedostatečné a neúměrné.
