V mrazivej štokholmskej noci kráča po železničnom moste mladý muž. Má legionársku chorobu a je silne podchladený. V nemocnici zistia, že Mikael je už sedem rokov vyhlásený za mŕtveho. Flora Hansenová o sebe tvrdí, že je médium, a živí sa tým, že organizuje seansy a predstiera rozhovory s mŕtvymi. Ako napísal švédsky denník Dagens Nyheter, začítate sa do knihy "v metre cestou domov, pokračujete v čítaní aj pri večeri a neprestanete až do skorého rána". Román vyšiel vo viac než pätnástich krajinách a stal sa rovnako ako predchádzajúce Keplerove knihy medzinárodnou senzáciou.
