It's a typical summer night in August. Literature professor Arne and artist Tove are with their children at a summer house in southern Norway. Their friend Egil is staying nearby. Above them all, a huge star suddenly appears blazing in the sky. No one knows what this phenomenon might be. Is it a star burning itself out? But why, then, has no one seen it before? Is it a brand new star? Life goes on, but not quite as before, as strange things start to happen on the fringes of human existence. 'The Morning Star' is a novel about what we do not understand, about great drama seen through the ordinary lens of life. But first and foremost, it is about what happens when the dark forces in the world are set free.

Jokum voelt zich nergens thuis, behalve bij zijn onafscheidelijke magneet waarvan hij denkt dat het ding geluk aantrekt. De liefde leert hij kennen als de hamster van zijn huisgenote Synne sterft en hij probeert om met zijn magneet het beestje tot leven te wekken. Het stel trekt naar San Francisco, waar de doortastende Synne Jokums fotografiecarrière gestalte geeft en hij alles doet om haar ambities waar te maken. Jokum noemt zichzelf geen fotograaf of kunstenaar, hij legt ‘dingen’ vast. Dingen die tegen hem praten en om zijn loyaliteit vragen. Voor Jokum schept ‘het ding’ orde in een chaotische wereld. In Magneet geeft Lars Saabye Christensen luchtig maar vlijmscherp commentaar op de tijdgeest, de mythes rond het kunstenaarschap en de gangbare ideologieën.

Jim, ktorý žil sám so svojou pobožnou mamou, odišiel na univerzitu a stal sa socialistom. A teraz, po toľkých rokoch Jim stojí na moste a chytá ryby, zatiaľ čo Tommy prechádza popri ňom vo svojom drahom mercedese. Petterson vo viacerých románových líniách rozpráva o životných zvratoch oboch mužov nielen od osudového stretnutia na moste, ale zo súčasnosti plynulo prechádza do minulosti a nadväzuje líniou spomienok na ich detstvo a mladosť, ktorú náhodné stretnutie opäť oživilo.
