Jednoduchý literárny príbeh sa odohrá v časovom priestore letných prázdnin, ktoré hlavný hrdina, trinásťročný Augustín, trávi pri mori s matkou, príťažlivou mladou vdovou, túžiacou užiť si života. Jej ľúbostná historka s neznámym mládencom v člne na šírom mori vážne a v podstate definitívne naruší dovtedy rýdzi, ničím nezaťažený vzťah medzi matkou a synom. Za tento román, ktorým sa Alberto Moravia vrátil po surrealistických a satirických odbočeniach ku „skutočnej" literatúre, získal autor v roku 1945 svoju prvú literárnu cenu.
