Howard Gardner

      The Theory of Multiple Intelligences

A revolutionary challenge to the widely held notion that intelligence is a single general capacity possessed by every individual to a greater or lesser extent. Gardner's trailblazing book revolutionized the worlds of education and psychology by positing that rather than a single type of intelligence, we have several--most of which are neglected by standard testing and educational methods. More than 200,00 copies of earlier editions have been sold; this reissue includes a new introduction by the author to mark the twenty-first birthday of this remarkable book. A comprehensive guide to the myriad issues at the nexus of culture and psychologyCultural differences affect everything from international relations to the trivial encounters of daily life. Tensions between the U.S. and Japan, strife between African-Americans and Koreans, the difficulty urban youth encounter in adapting to a white-collar professional culture―all can be traced, directly or indirectly, to cultural and psychological barriers. The Culture and Psychology Reader gathers a wide range of contributors to present a comprehensive guide to the myriad issues at the nexus of culture and psychology. What role have culture, race, and ethnicity assumed―or, rather, been allocated―in American psychology? How do traditionally marginalized groups, such as African-Americans, poor women, lesbians and gays, and bicultural people, perceive themselves and what can this tell us about the interplay between culture and psychology?Beginning with definitions and an overview, the book examines such issues as development, adaption, the acquisition of culture, the self in a cultural context, and diagnostic assessment and treatment acknowledging the risk of cultural bias. Contributors to this volume Clifford Geertz, Richard Shweder, John Ogbu, Laura Brown, Michelle Fine and Adrienne Asch, Cherrie Moraga, June Jordan, Arturo Madrid, Howard Gardner, and Arthur Kleinman.

    • "Howard Gardner's concept of multiple intelligences has been hailed as perhaps the most profound insight into education since the work of Jerome Bruner, Jean Piaget, and, even earlier, John Dewey. Now in The Disciplined Mind, Gardner pulls together the threads of his previous works in a major new synthesis aimed at parents, educators, and the general public alike. The Disciplined Mind looks beyond such parochial issues as charters, vouchers, unions, and affirmative action in order to explore the larger questions of what an educated person should be and how such an education can be achieved for all students. Gardner eloquently argues that the purpose of K-12 education should be to enhance students' deep understanding of truth (and falsity), beauty (and ugliness), and goodness (and evil) as defined by their various cultures. With this stance, Gardner transforms the tired debate between "traditionalists" and "progressives."" "In an effort to reconcile conflicting educational viewpoints, he proposes the creation of six different educational pathways that, when taken together, could satisfy people's concern for student learning and their widely divergent views of what knowledge and understanding should be."--Jacket

Howard Gardner transformed our understanding of intelligence, challenging the idea that it is a singular capacity. In this work, he expands on his framework to provide a groundbreaking perspective on creativity, spotlighting seven individuals who redefined various fields. Drawing from his concept of seven “intelligences,” which include musical and self-understanding, Gardner explores the lives of Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso, Igor Stravinsky, T.S. Eliot, Martha Graham, and Mahatma Gandhi. Each exemplifies a unique intelligence through their significant creative breakthroughs, which not only illuminate their achievements but also reflect the modern era that shaped and was shaped by them. By examining these pivotal moments, Gardner identifies patterns essential to understanding the creative process. He argues against the notion of a singular creativity, presenting evidence of shared personality traits and needs among creative individuals. He notes that initial breakthroughs often take a decade to achieve, with further developments requiring additional time. Gardner highlights the importance of supportive environments and the influence of informed peers in fostering creativity. He also acknowledges that extraordinary creativity often comes with significant personal costs.

A boli to jedni z najmúdrejších ľudí sveta, medzi ktorých patria Daniel Kahneman, Dan Ariely, Alison Gopniková, Howard Gardner, Antonio Damasio, Aaron James či Ryan Holiday. Preto vyhlasujem, idioti všetkých zemí a hlupáci všetkých druhov, toto je vaša chvíľka slávy: táto kniha hovorí len a len o vás. No vy sa v jej riadkoch nespoznáte... No ak nad ňou chceme zvíťaziť, musíme jej najprv porozumieť. V Psychológii stupidity vám svetovo najuznávanejší psychológovia a myslitelia – vrátane laureáta Nobelovej ceny a niekoľkých autorov bestsellerov – objasnia: prečo inteligentní ľudia občas uveria úplným nezmyslom, ako nás naše lenivé mozgy podnecujú robiť nesprávne rozhodnutia, prečo je diskusia s hlupákom pasca, ako nás mediálna manipulácia a nadmerná internetová stimulácia robia hlúpejšími, prečo si tí najhlúpejší ľudia neuvedomujú svoju stupiditu.
