Ako už napovedá samotný názov knihy, ide o smrť. A keďže Tom má štyri a pol roka, ide o smrť dieťaťa. Téma je teda ťažká, bolestná, neľútostná. A píše o nej Tomova matka v prvej osobe. Tom je jej prostredné dieťa, má staršieho brata a mladšiu sestru. Matka je Francúzska, Parížanka. Otec Angličan, Londýnčan. Pracovné povinnosti ho nútia sťahovať sa s rodinou z jedného konca sveta na druhý. Tri roky žijú vo Vancouveri, potom sa sťahujú do Sydney. A tam sa to stane: tam prídu o Toma. Matka sa k synovej smrti vracia s odstupom desiatich rokov. Rekonštruuje udalosti, svoje pocity, život rodiny pred Tomovou smrťou a po nej, svoj vzťah k mužovi a ostatným dvom deťom, svoj pocit viny. Čitateľ doslova do posledného riadku nevie, čo bolo príčinou Tomovej smrti. Len z istých náznakov tuší, že to bola nehoda, ale aká nehoda, a kto ju zapríčinil?
