V diele Newman podáva prehľad svojich náboženských názorov s neuveriteľnou presnosťou a elokvenciou. Vo vtedajšej anglickej spoločnosti panoval názor, že Newman spor s Kingsleym vyhral a svoju integritu úspešne obhájil. Napočudovanie, najpozitívnejšie reagovali vtedy veľmi vplyvné nekonformistické kruhy, no aj samotní anglikáni boli Newmanovi vďační za to, ako veľkoryso písal o ich cirkvi. Apológia nie je len autobiografia, ktorá vznikla na základe polemiky a satiry. Je to teologický dokument – a nielen to. Najmä vďaka poslednej kapitole ju možno považovať za veľmi dôležitý vklad do ekleziológie, teda do teologickej náuky o Cirkvi. Moderný vývoj či znovuzrodenie katolíckeho chápania povahy Cirkvi, ku ktorému Newman významne prispel, vyústilo do významných reforiem Druhého vatikánskeho koncilu (1962 – 1965), ktorý prakticky zavŕšil tridentskú epochu a začal písať novú kapitolu dejín kresťanstva.

Diskusie o slovenských univerzitách sa často sústreďujú na merateľné ukazovatele, ako sú svetové rebríčky, publikačná činnosť a efektivita riadenia. Napriek tomu chýba kľúčový pohľad: aký je cieľ univerzitného vzdelávania? John Henry Newman vo svojom klasickom diele argumentuje, že hlavným cieľom univerzít nie je vedecké skúmanie, úspech absolventov na trhu práce, ani vychovávanie odborníkov či dobrých občanov. Podľa Newmana je primárnym cieľom naučiť študentov myslieť a kultivovať ich myslenie, aby mohli správne a pravdivo poznávať realitu. Schopnosť správne myslieť je hodnotná sama osebe, aj keď prispieva k iným cieľom. V deviatich prednáškach Newman vysvetľuje tento cieľ, ukazuje, ako môžu univerzity prispieť k jeho naplneniu a vzťahuje ho k iným dôležitým hodnotám, ako sú vedecké poznanie, ekonomická a politická užitočnosť či náboženská viera. Dôsledky rezignácie na tento cieľ sú tiež predmetom jeho úvah. Po viac ako 150 rokoch je Newmanov text možné čítať ako proroctvo. Pridanú hodnotu tvoria šesť esejí od slovenských akademikov, pričom prvá sa zameriava na život a dielo kardinála Newmana, zatiaľ čo ostatné kriticky reflektujú hlavné tézy jeho diela z aktuálnej perspektívy.

Podnetom na napísanie Listu vojvodovi z Norfolku bola knižka publikovaná v roku 1874, v ktorej Gladstone kritizuje dogmu o pápežskej neomylnosti a vyzýva katolíkov, aby ju odmietli. A Newman odpovedá ‒ elegantne, inteligentne a presvedčivo ‒ podobne ako jeho Majster, ktorému takisto položili otázku o vzťahu cisára a Boha.

Ztráta a zisk je první knihou, již Newman publikoval po svém obrácení ke katolicismu. Jen za autorova života se román dočkal devíti vydání. John Henry Newman (1801–1890) se proslavil nejprve jako představitel reformního hnutí v anglikánské církvi, intenzivní studium dějin křesťanství jej však přivedlo až ke vstupu do katolické církve (1845). Příklad kardinála Newmana jako poctivého myslitele, teologa, pastýře a muže hlubokého duchovního života vyzdvihl papež Benedikt XVI. v září 2010, když jej během své návštěvy Velké Británie prohlásil za blahoslaveného. Z bohatého díla autora, který byl dosud v češtině nedostupný, předkládáme výběr zamyšlení, úryvků z kázání a meditací, které mohou inspirovat i křesťany 21. století.

Kardinál John Henry Newman (1801 — 1890) Jako duchovní anglikánské církve a univerzitní kazatel v Oxfordu se stal vedoucí osobností volného sdružení, jehož cílem byla mravní a náboženská obnova anglikanismu. Jeho záměrem bylo ukázat, že anglikánská církev je nejen anglickým národním dědictvím, ale pravou církví Kristovou. Poctivost a hloubka bádání v dějinách starověké církve jej nakonec dovedly k tušení, že skutečnou nástupkyní prvotní církve je římská církev. Po sedmi letech postupné konverze dospěl do plného společenství katolické církve, v níž přijal kněžské svěcení a později od papeže Lva XIII. dokonce kardinálskou hodnost. Protože do církve přišel po cestě vytříbených argumentů, byl předurčen stát se jejím významným apologetou. Jeho působení znamenalo pro katolickou církev v Anglii dobu renesance. V roce 2010 byl papežem Benediktem XVI. prohlášen za blahoslaveného.
