From platforms like Hollaback! and Everyday Sexism to movements such as #MeToo and #BeenRapedNeverReported, feminists are leveraging participatory digital media to combat sexism, misogyny, and rape culture. This book-length study examines how girls, women, and some men navigate rape culture through digital platforms like blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and mobile apps. It addresses four key questions: What types of harassment and misogyny are being challenged? How do participants use digital media to document experiences of sexual violence and sexism? Why do they choose to mobilize these technologies? What are the varied experiences of engaging in activism through digital means? To capture the diverse experiences of digital feminist activism, the authors combine their analysis of media content (blog posts, tweets, selfies) with in-depth interviews and observations of global online communities. The study reveals the complexities within digital feminist activism and underscores that while engaging in this activism may be technologically accessible, emotional, mental, and practical barriers still exist. These barriers can influence which feminist voices and perspectives are legitimized over others, highlighting the multifaceted nature of activism in the digital age.
