Nový Greenův román navazuje na jeho protikolonialistické protesty a pokračuje v ostré kritice kapitalistického znevažování ceny ľudského života. Hlavný hrdina, anglický obchodník s vysávačmi žijúci v Havaně, sa stáva nečakane agentom výzvednej služby. Svoju činnosť, ktorá mu pripadá nezmyselná, neberie vážne, a jeho jednanie vedie k tragickým záverom. Příbeh, hoci je napísaný ľahkou ironickou formou, má aj svoj hlbší význam a zmysel, dotýka sa niektorých problémov západného človeka a dokazuje aj možnosť mierového spolužitia dvoch rozdielnych hospodárskych sústav.

Román čerpá látku z národne oslobodzovacieho boja vietnamského ľudu. Vzrušujúci dej, líčiaci francúzske teroristické metódy a organizovaný boj ľudových vrstiev, sa rozvíja okolo osobného príbehu anglického novinára a amerického agenta vystupujúceho vo funkcii diplomata.

Moderná parafráza slávneho Cervantesovho románu Don Quijote. Hrdinom tragikomického príbehu je nasledovník Dona Quijota, skromný vidiecky farár Quijote v španielskej obci Toboso. Viac-menej nedopatrením je povýšený na monsignora, svoje staré rozhegané auto volá Rosinante podobne ako Don Quijote svoju mitru a na potulky sa vyberie s bývalým komunistickým starostom obce Sanchom, s ktorým sa priatelí. Spolu cestujú do Španielska, prežívajú veselé i vážne dobrodružstvá a dostávajú sa do konfliktu s políciou. Hlavnou myšlienkovou náplňou sú filozofické dišputy oboch priateľov, ktorí sú si ľudsky blízki, obhajujú na pohľad protichodné názory a vyhľadávajú slabiny protivníka. V ich rozhovoroch je trocha ironický humor. Za výrokmi oboch protagonistov cítiť úvahy a postoje samotného autora, o ktorom je známe, že sa vždy zasadzoval o humánne riešenie ľudských záležitostí a o existencie rôznych ideí a ich zbližovanie. Odehrává se v Mexiku ve 40. letech a osou díla je konflikt katolické církve se světskou mocí.
