Il ladro Grünlich approfitta dell’altrui bontà solo per salvarsi la pelle. E via così in un ingarbugliarsi di vite dentro lo spazio affollato degli scompartimenti, mentre il treno scorre sui binari «simile al movimento di una macchina da presa» (Domenico Scarpa, nella Postfazione). E in questo romanzo dall’umorismo impassibile il manovratore di destini Greene è come se leggesse la profezia oscura di quello che accadrà in Europa; nella naturale ineluttabile crudeltà delle persone, nel crescente antisemitismo incontrastato, nel disprezzo esibito dai conformisti verso ogni solidarietà. Chi soccombe del tutto alla fine sono i benintenzionati. <i>Il treno per Istanbul</i> è un classico romanzo <i>entre-deux-guerres</i>. Ma in quei vagoni potrebbe viaggiare benissimo un campione della spaesata umanità di oggi.
