John Cage bol americký skladateľ a filozof, ktorý sa preslávil ako priekopník „náhodnej hudby“ a elektronickej hudby. Jeho inovatívny prístup k hudbe a využitie neobvyklých zvukových zdrojov z neho urobili jednu z najvplyvnejších postáv povojnovej avantgardy. Cage sa zaoberal experimentovaním s hudbou, kde využíval princípy východných filozofií a náhody, čím spochybňoval tradičné vnímanie hudby. Jeho dielo „4′33″“ a koncept „pripraveného klavíra“ zanechali nezmazateľnú stopu v modernej klasickej hudbe a ovplyvnili vnímanie zvuku a ticha.

Skladatel a konceptualista John Cage patří k nejvýraznějším osobnostem hudby 20. století s přesahem do mnoha jiných oblastí umění. Rozsáhlý výběr z jeho korespondence pod strohým názvem The Selected Letters of John Cage vyšel v roce 2016 a je adekvátní náhradou jeho neexistující autobiografie. Kniha obsahuje přes pět set dopisů od jeho tvůrčích začátků až do konce života. První je z roku 1930: Cageovi bylo sedmnáct nebo snad osmnáct let – přesné datum odeslání chybí. Píše v něm svým příbuzným z cesty do Evropy, při níž si odskočil i do Alžíru – právě odtamtud je první z vybraných dopisů. Poslední dopis je datován 28. července 1992, tedy pouhé dva týdny před Cageovou smrtí. Adresátem je francouzská klavíristka Martine Josteová, dopis se týká provedení skladby Two a několika dalších. V osobní rovině je možné si z řady dopisů v duchu poskládat Cageův životopis možná lépe, než kdyby jej ve stáří skutečně napsal. Čtenář má před sebou sdělení nezamlžená nespolehlivou lidskou pamětí a přehnanou autostylizací.
Silence, A Year from Monday, M, Empty Words and X (in this order) form the five parts of a series of books in which Cage tries, as he says, "to find a way of writing which comes from ideas, is not about them, but which produces them." Often these writings include mesostics and essays created by subjecting the work of other writers to chance procedures using the I Ching (what Cage called "writing through").

V polovině 50. let 20. století spolupracovali legendární avantgardní skladatel John Cage a textilní návrhářka Lois Long na Knížce z bláta. Práci později odložili a zpět se k ní vrátili až začátkem 80. let, kdy autorskou knihu vydali jen v malém nákladu. Z kuchařky pro děti jakéhokoliv věku se neprávem stalo jedno z opomíjených děl proslulého umělce. Pro širokou veřejnost kniha vyšla až v roce 2017 na Princetonské univerzitě.
