Baconovo De signis (samostatná část jeho Opus maius, objevená a zpřístupněná teprve v roce 1978), představuje nejrozsáhlejší stře­dověké pojednání k obecné teorii jazykového a mimojazykového znaku. Jde o pozoruhodnou syntézu aristotelské sémantiky s augus­tinskou sémiotikou. Zvláštní pozornost zaslouží například teze, že znak je bytostněji určován vztahem k recipientovi, a nikoli k ozna­čovanému obsahu, široce pojatá teorie víceznačnosti a také nauka o analogii jakožto spontánním a v principu nekonečném rozvíjení označovacího vztahu vlivem přirozených vazeb i na půdě konvenč­ního jazyka.
