    Roger Bacon bol anglický filozof a františkánsky mních, ktorý kládol značný dôraz na štúdium prírody pomocou empirických metód. Bol považovaný za jedného z prvých európskych zástancov modernej vedeckej metódy, inšpirovanej Aristotelom a neskoršími pseudo-aristotelovskými dielami. Jeho dielo však odráža stredoveké myslenie, pričom značná časť jeho „experimentálnych“ poznatkov pochádzala z kníh. Recepcia Baconovho diela v priebehu storočí často odrážala záujmy a kontroverzie prijímateľov.

Jde o pozoruhodnou syntézu aristotelské sémantiky s augus­tinskou sémiotikou. Zvláštní pozornost zaslouží například teze, že znak je bytostněji určován vztahem k recipientovi, a nikoli k ozna­čovanému obsahu, široce pojatá teorie víceznačnosti a také nauka o analogii jakožto spontánním a v principu nekonečném rozvíjení označovacího vztahu vlivem přirozených vazeb i na půdě konvenč­ního jazyka.
