Jean Echenoz je popredný francúzsky prozaik, ktorého diela, často preložené do angličtiny, sa vyznačujú jedinečným štylistickým prístupom. Jeho písanie je charakteristické eleganciou a bystrým pozorovaním ľudskej povahy. Prostredníctvom svojich diel Echenoz skúma rôzne aspekty existencie s ľahkosťou a hravosťou. Jeho schopnosť zachytiť podstatu postáv a situácií z neho robí výraznú postavu v modernej francúzskej literatúre.

"Odchádzam", to sú prvé slová hrdinu románu Echenoza, ktorý sa práve rozhodol opustiť svoju ženu. Tieto slová sú aj poslednými slovami knihy, ktoré vysloví ten istý hrdina, keď sa po roku blúdenia a dobrodružstva, so zlomeným srdcom, vracia prenasledovať to, čo bolo jeho spoločným domovom. Kruh sa uzatvára, revolúcia je ukončená, zátvorka sa zatvára, hrdina sa len trochu postaral. Prežil dobrodružstvá, ktoré by sa mohli zdať vzrušujúce vďaka poruchám jeho srdca, dostal sa až na severný pól, aby získal poklad starého eskimáckeho umenia, bol okradnutý aj sám kradol, bol zvodcom aj zvádzaným, jednoducho žil. Zostáva mu len vágny pocit nepohodlia a zadýchanosť. Echenoz sa vo svojich knihách stal kartografom svojho času, zachytávajúc zemetrasenia, katastrofy, imagináciu, objekty, sny a dlhé sklony mimo reality: v obrazoch, fantáziách, snívaní o dobytí, v odcudzení seba a iných. "Odchádzam" je aj rozlúčkovou frázou storočia, ktoré nie je schopné vedieť, kam smeruje, a dokonca zabúda klásť si túto otázku. Odchádza, to je všetko.
Román U piána vypráví o Maxi Delmarcovi, jenž je celou svou bytostí oddán hudbě, a to dokonce i poté, co se z bytosti stává jen přízrak, k čemuž dojde dvaadvacet dní (a osmdesát šest stran) od chvíle, kdy ho čtenář poznal - je totiž zavražděn. Dále pak postava v románu vystupuje v této záhrobní podobě. Max trpí nezměrnou trémou, již zvládá jedině pomocí alkoholu. Jakmile ale sedí u klavíru a začne hrát, napětí mizí. Na rozdíl od předchozích románů, například Jdu nebo Velké blondýny (Les Grandes blondes, 1995), se vypravěč tentokrát zaměřuje na jedinou postavu, jediný osud, tedy na zmíněného Maxe.
