Mit Italien verbinden sich seit Goethes berühmter Reise südliche Sehnsuchtsbilder, die viele Künstlergenerationen magisch anzogen. Auch zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts blieb Italien ein häufig frequentiertes Reiseziel für junge Künstlerinnen und Künstler: August Macke, Walter Ophey, Erich Heckel, Max Pechstein, Anita Rée, Emy Roeder und viele andere machten sich hier auf die Suche nach Inspirationen abseits der ausgetretenen Pfade.
