Reinaldo Arenas (1943–1991) pochází z Kuby, kde trpěl trojitou klatbou jakožto homosexuál, nespoutaný spisovatel s příliš hýřivou a drzou imaginací a svobodomyslný disident. V roce 1980 se dostal do exilu do USA a právě tam se odehrává jeho poslední román Vrátný (1989). Je koncipován jako vyprávění kubánské emigrantské komunity v USA o vrátném Juanovi. Nejprve se čtenář seznámí s velmi pitoreskními obyvateli domu, kde Juan pracuje, a pak s jejich neméně svéráznými zvířaty, s nimiž se vrátný v závěru vydá na šílený útěk ke svobodě, symbolizované tajemnými dveřmi. Reinaldo Arenas, a prominent Cuban writer of the 20th century, faced severe repression, including imprisonment from 1974 to 1976, before fleeing to New York in 1980. His literary contributions earned him prestigious awards, including the Cintas and Guggenheim fellowships, and recognition as the best foreign novelist in France in 1969. Struggling with illness and despair over Cuba's situation, he tragically ended his life in 1990, leaving a poignant letter detailing his reasons, particularly his inability to continue fighting for freedom.
