V príbehu Terorista elegán, ktorý autori napísali spolu za jedným stolom v Mozambiku, sa stretávame s angolským „odborníkom na duchov“, ktorého portugalská polícia podozrieva z prípravy teroristického útoku. „Prišiel som zabíjať,“ hovorí hlavná postava druhého príbehu Na ulici vraha pršia lásky, ktorá sa snaží vysporiadať so svojou romantickou minulosťou, a to tým najbrutálnejším spôsobom. Tretí príbeh Čierna skrinka vznikal na rôznych miestach, keď si autori medzi sebou vymieňali správy, pričom každý dopĺňal text toho druhého. Noc v bezmennom meste je ponorená do chaosu, a kým vonku na ulici počuť streľbu, v dome starej Luzinhe sa rozpletá osobná dráma jednej rodiny, ktorá sa musí vyrovnať s dávnymi tajomstvami.

Román Spoveď levice je silným a tragickým príbehom o postavení žien v tradičnej mozambickej spoločnosti. Dej románu vychádza zo skutočných udalostí, ktorých bol svedkom sám autor počas svojej kariéry biológa. Mia Couto opisuje tajomný svet fiktívnej mozambickej dedinky Kulumani, ktorej ženy sa často stávajú obeťami krvilačných levov. Z denníka jednej z nich, Mariamar, sa dozvedáme, že skutočnými predátormi však nie sú levy, ale miestni muži. Tí sú konfrontovaní s moderným svetom a myslením až s príchodom poľovníka Archanjela. A vďaka tomuto stretu začnú vychádzať na povrch tajomstvá miestnych obyvateľov a dôkazy o ženských obetiach mužskej brutality a neľudských tradícií. „Nechcela som, aby ma vzali k moru. Túžila som len po tom, aby som sa vrátila do lona svojej matky, aby si ma privinula, aby som bola opäť dieťaťom. To bolo jediné more, po ktorom som túžila. Vte­dy som pochopila, prečo otec Amoroso hovorieval tak často o po­slednej potope. Presne to som si želala: záplavu, ktorá zmetie tento svet. Svet, ktorý núti ženy ako Hanifa rodiť deti, no nedovolí im byť matkami, ktorý ich núti vydať sa, ale nedopraje im poznať lásku.“

Set against the backdrop of the war between the Kingdom of Gaza, one of the last great pre-colonial African kingdoms, and the Portuguese colonialists, a young African woman Imani and the Portuguese sergeant Germano de Melo have shared an unexpected love. While Germano is left behind in Africa, serving with the Portuguese military, Imani is enlisted to serve as interpreter to the imprisoned emperor of Gaza, Ngungunyane, on the long voyage to Lisbon. For Ngungunyane and his seven wives, it will be a journey of no return. Whereas Imani will come back only after a decade-long odyssey through the Portuguese empire at the turn of the nineteenth century. In the third novel of his acclaimed Sands of the Emperor trilogy, Couto supplies a voice to those silenced by the horrors of colonialism. A powerful evocation of love, loyalty and war in 19th-century Africa
