Hanslickův habilitační spis (vlastně jediná striktně vzato vědecká, teoretická práce), publikovaný roku 1854. Hanslick byl mimo jiné inspirován estetickými názory Friedricha Vischera, hlavním motivem a ústřední myšlenkou spisu je protest proti obecně rozšířenému (u laiků, ale i u četných estetiků a hudebníků) chápání hudby (resp. obsahu hudby) jakožto jakýchsi všudypřítomných odkazů na mimohudební reality („mimohudební obsah“) a jakéhosi „jazyka citu“ (dobovou estetiku, proti níž vedl argumentaci, právě sám nazýval citovou estetikou), kteréžto chápání souvisí s trvalým působením koncepcí známých již od doby baroka a tehdy oživovaných hudebním romantismem a zejména novoromantismem. Obsah hudby Hanslick spatřoval v ní samotné, pro působivost hudby zdůrazňoval význam formy a jejího dění. Vztah hudby a pohybu by měl být podle Hanslicka hlavním předmětem zkoumání hudební estetiky. Hanslick ve svých úvahách vycházel zejména z ideálu absolutní instrumentální hudby vídeňského klasicismu. Důraz na instrumentální hudbu kladl Hanslick při řešení otázky obsahovosti hudby také z metodologických důvodů, protože u vokální hudby si nemůžeme být jisti, zda její významy a obsah pramení z hudby, nebo z textu.
