Kniha Umenie počúvať nie je v pravom slova zmysle knihou, ktorú napísal Erich Fromm, hoci je autorom všetkých textov. Za vznik tohto diela vďačíme bývalému asistentovi Ericha Fromma a správcovi jeho literárnej pozostalosti Dr. Rainerovi Funkovi, ktorý zo záznamov prednášok a seminárov, článkov a poznámok zostavil knihu o osobitej psychoanalytickej terapii, ktorej sa Fromm viac ako päťdesiat rokov venoval, a hoci ju plánoval opísať a publikovať vo väčšom rozsahu, za svojho života sa mu to nepodarilo zrealizovať. Posmrtne publikované texty v tejto knihe nie sú učebnicou psychoanalytickej terapie a nie sú ani náhradou Frommovej neexistujúcej interpretácie psychoanalytickej techniky, nič také nie je možné vytvoriť. Avšak texty v tejto publikácii poskytujú informácie o Frommovi ako terapeutovi a o spôsobe, akým sa zaoberal psychologickým utrpením ľudí našej doby. Pre jeho terapeutické metódy nie sú charakteristické rozvláčne teórie a abstrakcie ani diferenciálne diagnostické znásilnenie pacienta, ale skôr jeho schopnosť individuálneho a nezávislého vnímania základných problémov človeka. Frommov humanistický pohľad preniká do jeho myšlienok týkajúcich sa pacientov a zaobchádzania s nimi. Pacienta nevidí ako protiklad, pacient nie je fundamentálne odlišný človek. Medzi analytikom a analyzovaným je zjavná hlboká solidarita. (Dr. Rainer Funk, 1994).

A Choice Outstanding Academic Title of the Year Erich Fromm (1900-1980) is known to most readers as the author of the international bestseller The Art of Loving (1956). What may be less widely known is that Fromm was a social psychoanalyst whose psychoanalytic theories, developed around a humanistic concept of man and society, have had a profound impact on many fields and disciplines: on social life and societal organization, on politics, on religion, on psychotherapy and, last but not least, on the practice of mindfulness. Rainer Funk was Erich Fromm's last assistant. He wrote his dissertation about Fromm, was designated by Fromm's last will to be his sole literary executor, and is the editor of Fromm's writings. From his very intimate knowledge of Fromm's life and ideas, and his access to an archive that includes 6,000 letters, Funk introduces Fromm's central concepts and examines them in relation to Fromm's lived experiences and to his idea that life itself is an art. The question of "the art of living" runs through all of the chapters, from the Introduction, in which Funk describes meeting Fromm for the first time in 1972, to the last chapter, in which Funk reflects on the impact of Fromm's social-psychoanalytic writings and his efforts to live well.

Rainer Funk, Erich Fromm’s last scientific collaborator and administrator of his literary estate, answers a total of 100 questions posed by Hamid Lechhab. The conversation introduces the wide spectrum of Erich Fromm’s scientific and humanistic thought in order to make his findings meaningful to the present. The focus is on the social psychology developed by Fromm, with which it is possible to explain how technical, economic, and social changes affect the mental striving of human beings and lead either to more freedom and self-determination or to more dependence and being determined by others.

Technické utópie – napríklad lietanie – uskutočnila nová veda o prírode. Humánnu utópiu mesiášskej doby – zjednoteného nového ľudstva žijúceho v solidarite a v mieri, oslobodeného od ekonomického určenia a od vojny a triedneho boja – možno dosiahnuť za predpokladu, že na realizáciu humánnej utópie vydáme rovnakú energiu, inteligenciu a zanietenie, aké sme vydali na realizáciu našich technických utópií. Nikto nevie postaviť ponorky čítaním Julesa Verna, nikto nevie vybudovať humanistickú spoločnosť čítaním prorokov. Či sa takáto zmena od nadvlády prírodnej vedy k novej spoločenskej vede odohrá, nemôže povedať nikto. Ak áno, mohli by sme mať ešte vždy šancu na prežitie, ale či sa tak stane, bude závisieť od jedného faktora: od množstva brilantných, vzdelaných, disciplinovaných a starostlivých mužov a žien, ktorých priťahuje nová výzva k ľudskej mysli a fakt, že tentoraz nie je cieľom kontrola nad prírodou, ale kontrola nad technikou a nad iracionálnymi spoločenskými silami a inštitúciami, ktoré ohrozujú prežitie západnej spoločnosti, ak nie celého ľudstva. Som presvedčený, že naša budúcnosť závisí od toho, či sa, vzhľadom na uvedomenie si súčasnej krízy, najlepšie mysle zmobilizujú a obetujú sa pre novú humanistickú vedu o človeku.

Retomando temas ya tratados anteriormente en obras tan importantes como El arte de amar, El miedo a la libertad y Ser y tener, entre otras, Fromm documenta la relacion entre doctrina y vida y argumenta que esta ultima consiste en volver a nacer continuamente. La tragedia, sin embargo, es que la mayoria de nosotros morimos antes de haber comenzado a vivir. Evidentemente, sobre tales perspectivas no se puede construir ningun sistema y, en este sentido, la labor de Fromm en este libro consiste en filosofar a partir de lo concreto, aceptando las limitaciones del pensamiento abstracto y renunciando a cualquier tipo de actitud mesianica.
