Na jednej zo svojich početných služobných ciest do Afganistanu stretla iránska filmová dokumentaristka Siba Shakibová v utečeneckom tábore afganskú ženu Širin-Gol. Vnútorná sila a vyžarovanie tejto ženy, ktorá jej spontánne vyrozprávala svoj životný príbeh, ju natoľko zaujali, že sa rozhodla napísať o nej knihu. Širin-Gol, čo v preklade znamená Sladký kvet, sa narodila v odľahlej dedine v afganských horách. Vyrastala v nesmiernej chudobe a jej život bol predurčený stáročnými tradíciami, vierou v Korán a úzko chápané poslanie islamskej ženy. Širin-Gol je ešte malé dievčatko, keď do Afganistanu vtiahnu Rusi. Otec s bratmi odídu do hôr a pridajú sa k bojovníkom mudžahedinu. Jej sestry porušia tradície, odložia závoj, zvádzajú ruských vojakov, aby ich potom vydali na smrť. Keď ich dedinu zničia, utečú ženy do Kábulu. V hlavnom meste musí Širin-Gol navštevovať ruskú školu. Spočiatku má pred ňou strach, no čoskoro zistí, že vzdelanie prináša bohatší a hodnotnejší život. V dievčenských rokoch získava aj vnútornú silu prekonať všetky budúce ťažkosti: najprv zväzok s mužom, ktorému ju dajú ako náhradu za hráčske dlžoby, potom nespočetné prenasledovanie, týranie a znásilňovanie a napokon útek pred obávaným Talibanom.

When the young Afghanistanian girl Samira is born, her father, a commander fighting in the mountainous regions of Afghanistan, decides to raise her as a boy called Samir. The fact that Samir is really a girl is soon forgotton as Samir learns to fight, ride and shoot as well as any boy and when her father is killed she becomes the head of the family. As an adult, she falls in love with the male friend of her youth and is forced to reveal her true identity. In order to marry Bashir, she must relinquish the freedom she is afforded as a man. Samira follows her heart but hates wearing the veil. Eventually, the torment becomes too great and she decides that there must be a third way to live, as a confident woman not confined by the rules of her culture. This is her story.

A história de Shrin-Gol poderia ser também a de muitas afegãs. Uma vida sob o domínio do regime talibã, com um marido viciado em ópio, resistindo a estupros, à prostituição forçada e a uma tentativa de suicídio. Mas, fundamentalmente, é um relato de coragem, generosidade, convivência, amizade, resistência, determinação e amor. Narrada com rara sensibilidade, é a biografia comovente de uma mulher corajosa em busca de uma vida melhor, em que seus filhos possam vislumbrar um futuro distante do terror, do medo e da pobreza.

Ein eindringlicher Roman über die heilende Kraft des Geschichtenerzählens Anoush steht in der Lebensmitte an einem Wendepunkt: Ihre Freundin Anouk, wie sie selbst Tochter eines Iraners und einer Deutschen, mit der sie in Teheran aufwuchs wie mit einer Schwester, hat sich das Leben genommen. Für Anoush bleibt die Zeit stehen. Es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass sie Anouk verliert, doch diesmal ist der Verlust endgültig.
