Tato kniha vznikla z přednášek proslovených v dubnu 1963 na Kalifornské univerzitě v Berkeley. Autor si vybral jako téma svobodu a předsevzal si zabývat se znovu starým rozporem mezi svobodami formálními a svobodami reálnými. Raymond Aron (1905–1983) představuje v duchovních dějinách moderní Francie a Evropy jeden významný typ sociologického a politologického myšlení, jehož závažnost dnes již prověřil kritik nejneúprosnější – čas. Aron nevytváří žádný uzavřený sociologický systém ani nesofistikuje sociologické pojmy, ale filozoficky a sociologicky poučeně reaguje na nejaktuálnější problémy své doby, a to na úrovni jak vysoce obecné, tak konkrétně analytické. Autor slavných knih Opium intelektuálů, Demokracie a totalitarismus, či Esej o svobodách díky své intlektuální a mravní poctivosti, díky hlubokému poznání a vědomí o lidské, sociální a historické podmíněnosti všeho našeho usilování, odolal veškerým ideologickým svodům dvacátého století. Díky této poctivosti a životní zkušenosti si mohl také dovolit, aby jeho díla byla svrchovaně „neakademická“, protože, jak vtipně poznamenává Aronův životopisec, zatímco Aronův přítel z mládí Jean-Paul Sartre objevoval Heideggera a Husserla, Aron pozoroval Hitlerův nástup k moci.

Francouzský filozof a sociolog Raymond Aron autor desítek filozofických a politologických studií a esejů, pojal už v polovině našeho století záměr zpracovat dějiny právě probíhajícího století. Dešifrovat jejich význam a osvětlit tak všechny sféry moderní společnosti: ekonomii, společenské vztahy, politické režimy, vztahy mezi zeměmi a národy, diplomacii, ideologické rozpory. Aronův záměr zůstal nedokončen, ale veškerá jeho činnost a celé jeho dílo směřovaly k naplnění původního úmyslu.
