Thomas Mann, Lion Feuchtwanger, Paul Celan und Hermann Kasack nutzten alle den Dornseiff, ein Wörterbuch, das 1933 von Franz Dornseiff (1888-1960) erstmals veröffentlicht wurde. Mit dem Ziel, den „Reichtum der deutschen Ausdrucksmittel“ zu dokumentieren, bietet der Dornseiff eine unverzichtbare Ressource für Schreibende, die nach bedeutungsverwandten Wörtern (Synonymen) suchen, um ihre Texte präziser zu gestalten. Die umfassende Neubearbeitung des Standardwerks umfasst wichtige neue Sachgebiete wie Medien, Informatik und Sport, sowie eine grundlegende Revision des Wortschatzes mithilfe des „Deutschen Wortschatz“-Projekts der Universität Leipzig. Zudem wird die Artikelstruktur verbessert, eine ausführliche lexikographische Einführung von Herbert Ernst Wiegand beigefügt und eine leistungsfähige CD-ROM für gezielte Recherchen bereitgestellt. Die 8. Auflage ist eine moderne, elektronisch erschlossene Fortführung des berühmten Wörterbuchs, das die deutsche Sprache in die Gegenwart bringt.
