Aristofanes zaujímal kritický pohľad na všedné, opakované stvárňovanie komických scén, ktoré sám odmietal. Hľadal námety, ktorými by sa od iných komikov líšil svojou originalitou a zároveň poukazoval na spoločenské problémy jeho doby. Dlhotrvajúca peloponézska vojna, ktorej zastaveniu nepomáhali ani snahy umiernených politikov o uzavretie dlhodobého mieru, nedala Aristofanovi pri jeho tvorbe pokoja. Negatívny postoj voči vojne sa snažil vnášať do svojich komédií a neschopnosť politikov dohodnúť sa na mieri a udržiavať ho mimoriadne originálnym spôsobom zobrazil vo svojej hre Lysistrata. Ukazuje v nej, že muži zrejme nedokážu žiť v mieri a bez vojny. Čo by ich teda mohlo donútiť uzavrieť mier a skončiť nekonečné obdobie stále sa roznecujúcich bojov? Aristofanes na to prišiel vo svojej komédii – no predsa ženy! Keď sa muži nedokážu dohodnúť a spoločne zložiť zbrane, začnú ženy rozmýšľať, ako by k tomu mužov donútili. Ony predsa majú rovnako silné zbrane ako muži. Ako svoje zbrane ženy použijú počas vojny na mužov, nám Aristofanes ukazuje vo svojej jedinečnej a veľmi obľúbenej Lysistrate. Aristofanes bol zarytým odporcom vojny, čo vyjadruje vo viacerých hrách. Azda najsilnejšie prianie po mieri, v časoch krutej peloponézskej vojny, cítiť v jeho hre Mier. V hre nás privádza medzi bohov s cieľom nájsť a oslobodiť bohyňu mieru, ktorá sa kdesi podela, a prinavrátiť do života ľudí radosť, radovánky a oslavy, ktoré ľud požíva v časoch bez vojen. Tiež pranieruje tých, ktorým vojna prináša prospech a vyhovuje im a konfrontuje ich s inými, ktorí majú zase potešenie z mieru. Ďalšia oblasť, ktorej Aristofanes venuje pozornosť, je rozdelenie bohatstva medzi aténsky ľud. Tejto téme sa venuje v hre Plutos. Zamýšľa sa v nej nad tým, že bohatstvo je nespravodlivo rozdelené medzi ľudí, čo pripisuje slepote jeho boha Pluta, ktorá konečne vyhovuje i ostatným bohom. Čo by sa asi tak mohlo stať po vyliečení Pluta zo slepoty, nám ukazuje vo svojej hre. Grécka vzdelanosť, formovaná filozofiou, mala zásadný vplyv na kultúru a progresívny rozvoj Európy. Učenci zakladali filozofické školy, ktoré sa stali centrami učenosti, pričom Atény sa pýšili významnými osobnosťami ako Sokrates, Platon a Aristoteles. Aristofanes vo svojich Oblakoch kritizuje Sokrata a sofistiku, ktorú považoval za nebezpečnú, aj keď prispela k rozvoju filozofie. V tejto hre pranieruje metódy sofistiky a ukazuje, že aj dobré hodnoty musia niekedy využiť sofistické prostriedky na boj so zlými praktikami. Sám autor považoval Oblaky za svoju najlepšiu hru. Aténčania si veľmi vážili súdnictvo a aktívne sa zapájali do súdnych procesov. Aristofanes v hre Osy zobrazuje sudcov, ktorí sa stávajú závislými na pojednávaniach, pričom ich syn sa snaží napraviť jedného z nich. Hra humoristicky odhaľuje problémy súvisiace so súdením, ktoré boli pre Aténčanov obľúbenou činnosťou. Komedie slavného starořeckého dramatika. Hrdinou hry je athénský vinař Trygaios, který se nikoli na Pegasu, jak by se slušelo, ale na hřbetě smrdutého obřího chrobáka vydá na Olymp, aby u Dia orodoval za ukončení války. This new edition of Aristophanes is intended to replace the previous Oxford Classical Text published in 1900-1. Since that date it has been possible to construct a far better picture of the transmission of the text from antiquity to the age of printing and to obtain reliable reports of other significant manuscripts. While some of the new information has been taken into account for recent commentaries on individual plays, there is no easily available complete edition. Though the text of the plays is better preserved than that of Greek tragedy, the editor has thought it desirable to record or adopt a fair number of conjectures, some of them little known or unjustly disregarded; in a few passages he has ventured to offer suggestions of his own.

This is the third and final volume of a new verse translation of the complete plays of Aristophanes by Stephen Halliwell. The translations combine accuracy with an attempt to capture the rich dramatic and literary qualities of Aristophanic comedy.
