Rintaró Nacuki je len stredoškolák, no na pleciach mu už leží zodpovednosť za tisíce príbehov. Po milovanom starom otcovi totiž nezdedil len lásku ku knihám, ale aj jeho antikvariát. S antikvariátom je však viac starostí ako radostí, a tak sa ho rozhodne zavrieť. Vtedy sa pred ním zjaví hovoriaca mačka a požiada ho, aby jej pomohol knihy zachrániť. Mnohé z nich sú opustené a zdá sa, že vyslobodiť ich od nedbanlivých majiteľov dokáže iba táto netradičná dvojica. A tak sa mačací knižný ochranca a Rintaró vydávajú na úžasnú výpravu do sveta fantázie, do spletitých bludísk, kde na nich čaká nejedno dobrodružstvo.
