Wie Millionen andere ist Ravi aus seinem indischen Dorf in die Großstadt geflohen. Als obdachloser Gassenjunge schlägt er sich mit Gelegenheitsarbeiten und kleinen Diebereien durch. Ständig wird er von der Polizei gejagt, bis sich unverhofft ein Ausweg auftut: Der alte Schneider Apu findet Gefallen an dem flinken Kerl, nimmt ihn in seine Werkstatt auf und macht ihn schließlich zu seinem Schwiegersohn. Ob der »ehrliche« Weg nach oben führt? Die Händler drücken rücksichtslos die Preise. Die vornehmen Damen, in deren Luxusvillen Ravi und der alte Apu demütig zur Anprobe erscheinen, feilschen um jede Rupie. Die Wucherzinsen fressen die letzten Reserven. In qualvoller Enge ist eine pausenlos wachsende Sippe zusammengepfercht. Die beiden mögen sich Tag und Nacht die Finger wund nähen, es reicht bald kaum mehr zur täglichen Handvoll Reis. Als Apu stirbt, bricht der kleine Traum vom großen Glück und Aufstieg zusammen. Da bietet ihm seine ehemaliger Bandenchef, der zum König des Schwarzmarktes aufgestiegen ist, eine letzte Chance.
