Er war weder Ingenieur noch Pilot, hat aber entscheidend zur Entwicklung des Fliegens und besonders des Segelfliegens beigetragen. Er war kein Berufssoldat, bewies aber im Ersten Welkrieg außerordentliche Fähigkeiten als Kämpfer und Kommandeur. 1914 Freiwilliger, Artilleriehauptmann, wurde er 1918 Oberstleutnant, sieben Mal verwundet und acht Mal ehrenvoll im Armeebefehl erwähnt. Marschall Foch sah in ihm die Verkörperung des Heldentums.
