Son ambition n’est pas d’inscrire sa vie dans le mouvement de l’Histoire, mais d’offrir le récit d’une existence de femme et d’écrivain qui côtoie rapidement Balzac et Sainte-Beuve, l’abbé de Lamennais et le socialiste Pierre Leroux – et bien sûr Musset et Chopin. Le lecteur trouvera ici le tiers, environ, de cette œuvre immense dont les vingt volumes commencent à paraître en 1854 et qui occupe une place essentielle dans l’histoire de l’autobiographie.
