Tento katechismus je pokusem o shrnutí křesťanské víry do meditativních textů, které zvou čtenáře ke kontemplaci. Chce podnítit k přemýšlení o základních a mezních otázkách života. Stejně jako klasický katechismus je rozčleněn do otázek a odpovědí. Autor, přední německý teolog Gerd Theissen, se snažil každý oddíl formulovat tak, aby byl srozumitelný sám o sobě a aby se mohl číst pokud možno i samostatně. Tyto meditativní texty jsou rozčleněny do řádků, z nichž každý je nositelem smyslu. Připomínají tak básně. V některých převládají obrazy, v jiných reflexe, některé chtějí informovat, jiné i kritizovat. Reprezentují protestantismus, který chápe moderní svět jako výzvu k tomu, abychom křesťanskou víru vyjádřili vždy nově. Všude musíme rozlišovat mezi tradiční vírou a tím, co v ní dnes nacházíme pravdivého a smysluplného. V co možná nejúspornějších výpovědích jsem se snažil vyjádřit, co považuji na křesťanské víře za nejdůležitější. Dával jsem přednost shodě se sebou samým před shodou s dogmaty a církvemi. S takovýmto přesvědčením se ovšem protestant nenachází na okraji své církve, nýbrž uprostřed ní. Protestantismus je náboženství rozumu a svobody. Tato věrouka je i přes svůj osobní charakter orientována ke konsensu. Navazuje na tradici, nechce se od ní unáhleně distancovat. Usiluje o porozumění a respekt pro víru i tam, kde se jí nedostává souhlasu.

Das Neue Testament ist die Schriftensammlung einer kleinen religiösen Subkultur im Römischen Reich, die durch Neuinterpretation der jüdischen Religion entstand und sich binnen 100 Jahren zu einer selbständigen Religion entwickelte. Zwei historische Gestalten haben sie geprägt: Jesus und Paulus. Die vorliegende Einführung stellt die Entstehung der durch sie (direkt und indirekt) hervorgerufenen Schriften im Zusammenhang mit der Geschichte des Urchristentums dar. Sie setzt einen besonderen Akzent auf die Entwicklung der Formensprache der neutestamentlichen Schriften und die Bearbeitung ihres religiösen Grundproblems, wie in einem monotheistischen Milieu eine menschliche Gestalt neben Gott gerückt werden konnte. Die dabei sichtbar werdenden formalen und inhaltlichen Besonderheiten erklären, warum diese Schriften in den Kanon der Alten Kirche aufgenommen wurden.
