By examining these aspects, it aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of economic principles from a Manchu perspective, offering valuable insights into cultural and historical contexts.

The book features English translations of three Manchu-language primers, accompanied by an introduction that facilitates learning both Manchu and Mandarin. It serves as a valuable resource for those interested in exploring Qing history, as well as the literature and culture of Manchu society.

China versteht sich seit jeher als ein „Land der Höflichkeit und Güte“. Das in dieser Eigencharakterisierung zum Ausdruck gelangende Selbstverständnis hat heute, da die Rückbesinnung auf die in erster Linie konfuzianisch geprägte eigene Kulturtradition erneut populär geworden ist, wieder Hochkonjunktur. Bei europäisch-chinesischen Begegnungen ist die Höflichkeit immer schon als ein empfindliches und gewichtiges Problemfeld betrachtet worden, und Irritationen über ihre Formen fehlen bis auf den heutigen Tag in kaum einem europäischen China-Bericht. Yong Liangs linguistisch- pragmatische und gleichzeitig auch kulturwissenschaftlich akzentuierte Untersuchung stellt die Höflichkeit im Chinesischen umfassend dar und verdeutlicht ihren hohen Stellenwert im Gespräch der Kulturen. Ihre Ergebnisse sind für eine produktive Gestaltung interkultureller Kommunikation zwischen China und Europa unverzichtbar.
