After it emerged as a market commodity in the 18th century, coffee was easily adapted to cultivation in the highlands of Central America. Guatemala in particular has relied on coffee cultivation as a part of its economic identity: it has been a premier export crop for over 300 years. The importance of coffee to the country lies in the large labour investment in each stage of production. The book covers agricultural, social, and cultural aspects of coffee culture in Guatemala in old photographs, charts, tables and maps. Wagner's work shows how Guatemala has met the economic complexity to which this product is subject, and why coffee remains the solid foundation crop of the country today.

Product development and ramp-up is a well-researched challenge for industry. However, how to end the production of a product is a blind spot for industry and science although practitioners are calling for scientific support. This book sheds light on the topic of production phase-out by offering measures that can turn a process that is perceived as uninspiring to a success pillar for companies. The book reveals cross-industry insights on the relatively new topic of phase-out. The interview findings are mirrored with the Phase-Out Process Model, which describes activities and tasks to be performed during a phase-out. As an instrument to support the implementation of the process model, the Phase-Out Production Planning and Control was developed as an add-on to standard production IT support. It enables companies to better forecast spare parts needs and expected remaining stock costs at the proposed end of production. Through a qualitative and a conceptual research phase, the findings of this dissertation show that there is a high potential of improving phase-out in the industry. This manuscript provides theoretical and managerial implications to pave the way towards enhancing phase-outs. This potential can be raised by implementing the proposed formalization structures and mathematical models based on empirical and conceptual research. This book, therefore, helps to promote the effective implementation of a formalized phase-out in company’s management practice to make their business more efficient.

Zielgruppe sind auch Studierende, die ein oder mehr Semester in Israel studieren oder ein Praktikum absolvieren wollen. Regina Wagner, M. A., studierte Politikwissenschaft, Geschichte und FremdsprachenKombination in Regensburg, Boulder/ Colorado und Jerusalem. Nach ihrem Abitur 2003 verbrachte sie 10 Monate in Jerusalem: Die erste Hälfte als eine Art „Freiwilligendienst“ im Haus von Efraim Franz Wagner, einem älteren Herrn, der 1938 aus Frankfurt/Main nach Israel ausgewandert war, und die zweite Hälfte als Studentin an der „Rothberg International School“ an der Hebräischen Universität. Jetzt ist sie in Madison, Wisconsin in einem Promotionsstudium. Dr. Roland Hornung ist Professor für Angewandte Mathematik an der Hochschule Regensburg und Dozent im Zusatzstudium „Internationale Handlungskompetenz / Länderblock Nahost“ an der Universität Regensburg. Im Jahre 1992/1993 verbrachte er ein Semester (inklusive Semesterferien) in Jerusalem. Er schrieb Software zur Tourenplanung und Verschnitt-Optimierung, u. a. für den Nahrungsmittelkonzern „Osem“.
