L'âge d'or de l'opéra, l'âge d'or des castrats : le XVIIIe siècle. Farinelli fut le plus illustre d'entre eux. Originaire du sud de l'Italie, éduqué à Naples, très vite sa renommée l'entraîna à l'étranger. Après Londres et à la demande de la reine d'Espagne, il s'établit à Madrid, où le neurasthénique Philippe V se consume dans l'inaction. Et voilà le miracle : la voix de Farinelli agit sur le roi comme une drogue miraculeuse, il revit et s'intéresse de nouveau aux affaires de l'Etat. Personnage dorénavant important de la Cour espagnole, richissime, décoré de l'ordre prestigieux de Calatrava, le castrat reste vingt-deux ans à Madrid. Il se retira à Bologne, où défila toute l'Europe, de Mozart à Casanova.
