    Inversion in Milton's poetry
    • This book sets out to provide a comprehensive description of inversions of word order in Milton’s English poetry, together with statistics and commentary on this rhetorical technique. The author concludes that the most frequent type of inversion is that of Object-Subject-Verb, which he ascribes to the poet’s native instinct and/or his familiarity with Latin syntax. Furthermore he notes that this type is an ideal tool for smoothing over the continuation of a discourse.

Historical and textual in approach, they closely examine the language of Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained in three major formula, rhetoric and the Word. The author's main concern is to explain the meaning of the epics in light of Renaissance rhetoric and theology.
