This book features papers from the 6th International Workshop on Model Oriented Data Analysis held in June 2001. The workshop series began in March 1987 near Eisenach and has since taken place in various locations, including Bulgaria, Russia, Greece, and France. Initially aimed at fostering collaboration between scientists from Eastern and Western Europe in theoretical and applied statistics, particularly in experimental design, the workshops have adapted to the changing geopolitical landscape, making such exchanges easier. Despite the reduced barriers, providing opportunities for interaction remains essential. The MODA meetings are known for their friendly atmosphere, facilitating discussions between young and senior scientists that often lead to long-term collaborations. This stimulating environment is maintained by limiting participation to around eighty, encouraging communal living, and ensuring careful scientific oversight by the Programme Committee. The tradition of offering low-cost accommodation, affordable fees, and financial support for young and Eastern participants relies on sponsorship and external funding, which have been crucial for the success of these meetings.

Graphs are used to understand the relationship between a regression model and the data to which it is fitted. The authors develop new, highly informative graphs for the analysis of regression data and for the detection of model inadequacies. As well as illustrating new procedures, the authors develop the theory of the models used, particularly for generalized linear models. The book provides statisticians and scientists with a new set of tools for data analysis. Software to produce the plots is available on the authors website.

This volume contains the majority of the papers presented at the 5th Inter national Workshop on Model-Oriented Data Analysis held in June 1998. This series started in March 1987 with a meeting on the Wartburg, Eisenach (Germany). The next three meetings were in 1990 (St Kyrik monastery, Bulgaria), 1992 (Petrodvorets, StPetersburg, Russia) and 1995 (Spetses, Greece). The main purpose of these workshops was to bring together lead ing scientists from 'Eastern' and 'Western' Europe for the exchange of ideas in theoretical and applied statistics, with special emphasis on experimen tal design. Now that the separation between East and West has become less rigid, this dialogue has, in principle, become much easier. However, providing opportunities for this dialogue is as vital as ever. MODA meetings are known for their friendly atmosphere, leading to fruitful discussions and collaboration, especially between young and senior scien tists. Indeed, many long term collaborations were initiated during these events. This intellectually stimulating atmosphere is achieved by limiting the number of participants to around eighty, by the choice of location so that participants can live as a community, and, of course, through the care ful selection of scientific direction made by the Programme Committee.
