Based on a wide range of Western and local materials, this book offers an introduction to the historical anthropology of the Muslim Uyghur of Xinjiang from the late 19th century to 1949. The author argues that social relations in this era were shaped at all levels by the principles of reciprocity and community. Particular attention is paid to the domestic domain and to life-cycle and religious rituals. This is the first time that Xinjiang has been approached from the perspective of historicalanthropology. Giving substance to the concept of tradition which modern Uyghurs invoke when constructing their collective identity, Bellér-Hann's study also has implications for contemporary analyses of inter-ethnic relations in this sensitive region.

Ethnicity, language, and religion are significant aspects of contemporary social identities in Turkey’s little-known eastern Black Sea coast. Based on fieldwork carried out between 1983 and 1999, the authors analyze recent economic and political developments in the region in the context of more general changes in Turkish civil society and widespread doubt about the continued viability of the secular institutions of Atatürk’s republic.

Drawing together distinguished international scholars, this volume offers a unique insight into the social and cultural hybridity of the Uyghurs. It bridges a gap in our understanding of this group, an officially recognized minority mainly inhabiting the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China, with significant populations also living in the Central Asian states. The volume is comparative and interdisciplinary in focus: historical chapters explore the deeper problems of Uyghur identity which underpin the contemporary political situation; and sociological and anthropological comparisons of a range of practices from music culture to life-cycle rituals illustrate the dual, fused nature of contemporary Uyghur social and cultural identities. Contributions by 'local' Uyghur authors working within Xinjiang also demonstrate the possibilities for Uyghur advocacy in social and cultural policy-making, even within the current political climate.

ANOR is an open access, peer reviewed book series edited by Manja Stephan-Emmrich and Jeanine Dağyeli who took over in Autumn 2021 from the previous editorial team Ingeborg Baldauf and Jürgen Paul. The series features original research in the Humanities and Social Sciences on Muslim Central Asia and adjacent regions. ANOR aims at a shift of perspective: By taking the historically consolidated region of Central Asia with its five former Soviet republics, Xinjiang and Afghanistan, including its multiple diasporas, as its focus and point of departure for analysis, ANOR employs area as a method. The series publishes empirically and linguistically grounded research from the Humanities and Social Sciences on and from the region. The Editorial Board of ANOR invites proposals for small to medium-length monographs (including outstanding MA theses), collaborative writing projects or collected volumes that are based on original research and profound regional expertise. ANOR especially seeks contributions from Anthropology, History, Area Studies, Literary Studies, Linguistics, the History of Ideas, Digital Humanities and Human Geography that tackle relevant issues in the field of Central Asian Studies and/or explore novel methodologies, approaches and theories.
