This book presents theoretical backgrounds, methods and practical approaches for addressing the urgent issue of agrobiodiversity loss in transdisciplinary research projects. In short, transdisciplinary research aims at finding solutions for ‘real world’ problems that are perceived important by society, and does so by actively involving non-academic stakeholders and practitioners into the research process. It puts emphasis on integrating knowledge and skills of stakeholders operating at different levels, and on negotiation processes concerning values, goals and outcomes of the research, while also building on collaborative learning and practical action. The handbook focuses on the process of generating transformation knowledge towards sustainable and equitable agrobiodiversity management and use, and aims to inspire change – in research, institutions and in the field. Written from a science perspective, it targets an audience of scientists in international and national institutions working in the area of agrobiodiversity research and teaching, as well as students and development practitioners involved in transdisciplinary research projects.

Setting objectives is a key activity for any breeding program, as this has direct implications for the success of a project. Productivity improvements have been the key objective of most breeding programs to date; international, national, private and public alike. Increasing the yield of important food crops was seen as the answer for overcoming food shortages and reducing hunger in the world.

This book is rooted in fifteen months of field studies in Rajasthan, India, where pearl millet is the staple crop. The adoption of modern crop varieties has been limited, with many farmers producing their own seed and utilizing traditional landraces alongside modern varieties for crop improvement. A traditional seed distribution system has preserved various landraces, ensuring that poor farmers have access to seeds and can share innovations affordably. However, the introduction of modern varieties tailored for farmers with better land resources has altered agricultural practices and seed usage, impacting seed and food security, human health, nutrition, and social dynamics within villages. Over 900 farmers participated in the research, employing a participatory and gender-sensitive approach that allowed diverse voices to be heard. The inclusion of original statements from rural individuals provides an intimate glimpse into their experiences. Collaboration between the author and a population geneticist enriched the discussion with insights from natural sciences, highlighting the rationale behind farmers' selection practices. This work contributes to ongoing debates on genetic resource conservation, seed systems, participatory plant breeding, and the broader reorientation of international agricultural research.

KlappentextDie Bildungswerkstatt Pädagogik und Landwirtschaft in Loheland (25.-26. Oktober 2008) thematisierte die Chancen einer neuartigen Verbindung von Pädagogik und Landwirtschaft. Den Hintergrund dafür bildete einerseits die ursprüngliche Bildungsidee und Tradition Lohelands, die anknüpft an die zu Beginn des vergangenen Jahrhunderts entstandenen reformpädagogischen Ideen sowie an die Waldorfpädagogik und Anthroposophie; andererseits verbanden sich die Themen der Bildungswerkstatt mit aktuellen Debatten wie den Zielen der UN-Dekade „Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung“ und europäischen Bestrebungen zur Entwicklung einer Sozialen Landwirtschaft, die vielfältige Angebote auch in pädagogischen und therapeutischen Aufgabenfeldern ermöglicht. In Arbeitsgruppen wurden beispielhaft Orte und die dort entwickelten Herangehensweisen dargestellt, sowie die für verschiedene Altersgruppen - vom Kleinkind - über das Schul- und Jugendalter - jeweils spezifischen Fragestellungen und Chancen herausgearbeitet.

Cependant, les méthodologies pour collaborer avec les paysans dans la définition des objectifs d’un programme de SPP ont été peu décrites. Ce manuel vise à combler cette lacune en proposant des cadres pour analyser les domaines thématiques. Il offre des méthodes et outils de communication pour aider chercheurs et paysans à identifier les groupes cibles, analyser les systèmes de production et définir les priorités. En outre, il fournit des conseils pratiques pour la planification et l’exécution des activités de sélection participative et de création de systèmes semenciers, tout en résumant les expériences passées.
