As cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death in the western world, it is essential that we understand the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Although cholesterol has caught the public's attention, oxidized LDL is, scientifically, the major risk factor. The book explains what glycation is and how it could lead to the oxidation of LDL. It also summarizes the data on dietary sugars as risk factors and on diabetics as, in effect, an experimental model for atherosclerosis.
