This work emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary and applied research for achieving regional sustainability. It begins with decision-making in sustainable development, exploring ethics and multi-criteria analysis, as well as stakeholder approaches to intertemporal valuation. The text addresses the interconnectedness of society, economy, and environment, particularly in integrated coastal management, and discusses the communication of sustainable development options and the evaluation of trade-offs. Subsequent sections focus on modeling as a tool for policy analysis, assessing the effectiveness of conservation strategies, and evaluating incentive programs in Saxony, Germany. It also examines joint abatement strategies for addressing acidification and tropospheric ozone, and the dynamics of pesticide management. The efficiency of multiple-instrument policies for controlling agricultural nonpoint pollution, specifically nitrate pollution, is analyzed.
