It addresses the increasing availability of commercial flow sheeting simulation software used in early process design steps in industry. Emphasizing the need for sophisticated models based on activities rather than concentrations, the content begins with an introductory chapter followed by an in-depth discussion in Chapter 2 on reactive phase equilibria of ionic and non-ionic solutes using chemical potentials. Chapter 3 covers multicomponent diffusion and mass transfer, focusing on reactive mass transfer on rigid and mobile surfaces, where interfacial reactions, molecular diffusion, and adsorption layers play crucial roles. Case studies include the extraction of zinc with a cation exchanger and acetic acid with an anion exchanger. The final chapter reviews techniques utilizing polymeric species in extractive processes, highlighting the significant impact of adsorption layers and surfactants on liquid-liquid extraction efficiency. Additionally, it provides a brief overview of extraction apparatus and the hydrodynamics of columns, including hydraulic design and droplet population balances.
