From Bulamari to Yerwa to metropolitan Maiduguri

Maiduguri, the administrative and economic center of Bornu Province in northern Nigeria, has risen to prominence relatively recently, particularly following European colonial interventions in the Kanem-Bornu region during the late 19th century. Prior to this, settlements existed in the area, benefiting from its advantageous geo-economic position, evolving into significant market and trade hubs with connections extending to northern Sahara regions like Libya. Despite Maiduguri's historical importance and its predecessors, there is a notable lack of scholarly literature and reliable information regarding the city and its history. This gap prompted the creation of a comprehensive collection that brings together contributions from various academic disciplines focused on Maiduguri. The essays were developed as part of the Special Research Area 268 "Cultural Development and Language History in the West African Savanna" at the universities of Frankfurt/Main and Maiduguri, with support from the German Research Foundation (DFG). The collection covers topics such as the city's history, urban geography, physical geography, linguistic aspects, and social dynamics, providing a multifaceted exploration of Maiduguri's significance and development.
