The cytology of soft tissue tumors

In recent years, the diagnosis of soft tissue tumours has become a key focus for fine needle aspiration (FNA). This book aims to enhance the cytological evaluation of FNA smears from these tumours and provide cytological criteria for histotype diagnoses. It details and illustrates both common and rare tumours, with a focus on those whose cytological features have been primarily documented in case reports or small series. The text discusses the diagnostic application of ancillary methods and classifies smears based on principal microscopic patterns to aid in the diagnostic process. The selection of entities, diagnostic features, and differential considerations are grounded in 30 years of experience with FNA at the Musculoskeletal Tumour Centre at the University Hospital in Lund, Sweden. Illustrations are drawn from cases in the Department of Pathology and Cytology at Lund University Hospital. Given that soft tissue tumours are relatively rare and often challenging to diagnose via fine needle aspirates, this publication serves as a valuable resource for cytopathologists engaged in FNA tumour diagnosis, enriching their benchside references.
