This volume presents the proceedings from the 1st International Conference on Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction (ACII 2005), held in Beijing from October 22–24, 2005. Traditionally, human-machine interaction has been passive, lacking the ability to recognize or express affective information. This limitation hinders natural communication between computers and humans. The capacity to recognize and express affect is vital for effective interaction, suggesting that computers must eventually process affect to engage with users similarly to human interactions. Affective computing and intelligent interaction represent a crucial emerging technology, focusing on the recognition, understanding, and expression of emotional states by computers. This area is rapidly evolving, garnering significant attention due to its promising applications in virtual reality, network games, smart surveillance, and perceptual interfaces. The multidisciplinary nature of this field encompasses psychology, cognitive science, physiology, and computer science. ACII 2005 served as a platform for scientists and engineers to share their findings and experiences in this dynamic domain. The volume includes 45 oral papers and 82 poster papers, selected from 205 contributions submitted by researchers worldwide.
