This book examines the effects of study abroad experiences on students’ culture and identity, particularly focusing on French students in Australia and their readjustment to home culture. It addresses perceived cultural proximity, lack of prior knowledge about Australia, and the impact of distance on their experiences. Through long-term and cross-sectional studies, the author investigates culture shock, reverse culture shock, and cultural identity, exploring the cyclical journey of French academic sojourners. The research highlights how the processes of acculturation and repatriation, along with language experiences, shape their perceptions of cultural identity. Once the students navigate the challenges of culture shock and achieve adjustment, many express a reluctance to return home. The book raises critical questions about the impact of this experience on returnees who encounter the insularity of their home society. It also considers whether the French community is recognizing a brain-drain of educated individuals abroad and discusses the implications for borderless higher education. Additionally, it evaluates the importance of pre-departure preparation from institutions and individuals, both linguistically and psychologically, prompting reflection on these significant issues.
