In the second volume of the interdisciplinary research project on the "Reconstruction of the environment and subsistence at the Habur in the Late Holocene," five contributions present data on the current regional environment: geology (W. Schöler), soil composition (U. Smettan), mammalian fauna (D. Kock), fish fauna (F. Krupp/W. Schneider), and amphibians and reptiles (H. Martens). Subsequent studies focus on the environmental conditions and subsistence practices of the Assyrian city Dūr-Katlimmu, utilizing excavated remains such as animal bones (C. Becker), plant seeds (W. van Zeist), charcoal (H. Kürschner), and human skeletons (H. Schutkowski). Additional contributions explore food storage practices in the 3rd millennium BCE (P. Pfälzner), irrigation techniques (M. Fales), and settlement structures during the Neo-Assyrian period (D. Morandi Bonacossi). The volume concludes with an evaluation of the political-historical impact of anthropogenic changes in the Habur region due to Dūr-Katlimmu (1300-539 BCE), contrasting these effects with the enhanced livability and economic security that resulted (H. Kühne).
