Volume 7 of the series covers the freshwater red and brown algae of Central Europe. Freshwater red algae thrive in running waters, lakes, ponds, wet soils, and occasionally in hot sulphuric springs, while the small group of freshwater brown algae is found in rivers and lakes. Several species of these algae are listed as threatened. The freshwater Rhodophyta comprises about 200 species, with only a third found in Europe, representing nine orders and various life forms. In contrast, Phaeophyceae, primarily marine, range from tiny thalli to large kelps, but only seven freshwater species have been described globally. These freshwater phaeophytes are small, appearing as dark brown crusts or cushions on hard surfaces, with some preferring clear waters and others brackish habitats. Previous works on Central European freshwater algae were published in 1925 and 1977, and since then, no updated identification keys have been available for these groups. This volume aims to bridge that gap, providing algologists and researchers with the tools to accurately identify European freshwater red and brown algae using current nomenclature. It includes detailed descriptions and high-quality illustrations to aid in species identification.
