Education in fragile contexts

What is the relationship between education and fragility? Can educa- tion play a supportive role in conditions of fragility, or does it do more harm than good? How can educational measures be conceptualized and implemented to initiate a „turn-around“ out of a deep crisis? And how do local and international political actors impact formal and infor- mal education in complex fragile contexts? This volume addresses such urgent questions by combining theoretical reflection, case studies, and policy-related articles to take the emerg- ing debate on education in contexts of fragility one step further. Cases include the war-torn societies of Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Guinea as well as the so-called quintessential fragile states - the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia and Afghanistan. The contributors to this reader are both academics and practitioners, synthesizing research and first-hand knowledge of the field. It there- fore provides insights for development practitioners and scholars alike.
