This book significantly contributes to the history and sociology of Greco-Roman sporting life by providing a comprehensive catalogue of all known Isthmian victors, many of whom have not been systematically dated. It also dates periodonikai who may have won at the Isthmian games. The introduction addresses the challenges of dating Isthmian victors and includes a thorough examination of the games' curriculum and its evolution over time. Additionally, it considers the changing origins of Isthmian victors and situates the Isthmian games within the broader context of Greco-Roman sporting life as it transformed over a millennium.
